Get Off Social Media
Get Off Social Media! Yes, I know that is a bold statement coming from a branding and social media strategist and educator.
The reason why I am saying get your audience off social media is that you do not own any of your accounts on social media. I repeat, you DO NOT own any of your content on social media. Your accounts can disappear just like that (Insert *snap* gesture here).
If a social media platform decides to pause, suspend, or delete your account right now, all your efforts you put into building your social media account and your community will be lost.
And this is why, you need to get them off social media and onto an email list. I wanted to walk through what to consider when you are creating this customer journey.
Things to consider when you are creating this customer journey.
The first thing to consider is providing some sort of opt-in. What this means is offering something free and valuable in exchange for their email address. Some opt-ideas: discount code or a coupon, gift with purchase, a checklist, ebook, or video lesson. Figuring out what opt-in you want to provide based on what your audience wants to receive will take a little bit of market research.
Make it easy for your audience.
The next thing to consider is making it as easy as possible for them to opt-in. If you are posting on social media and you say get your checklist in the link in bio, make sure you put the link in your bio. Make it as easy as possible for your audience. For example, don’t include a link in the caption area of Instagram of a newsfeed post. That area does not provide a clickable link. You are better off directing them to either the link in bio or sending you a direct message.
It doesn’t stop here.
It is really important to consider what happens after they click your link and receive your free content.
Many business owners grow their email list with opt-ins and then the buck stops there. They don’t do anything with their email and then wonder why people aren’t buying their products or services.
In actuality, once someone opts into your email list, that is where things should just begin in the customer journey off social media. Remember, if someone opts into your email list, they have shown interest in your business. It is important to continue nurturing that relationship.
One of the best ways to nurture that relationship is to stay in touch with more emails so that they can get to know you and your company, get to know what services and products you offer, and eventually have them buy from you.
I would encourage you to consider email automation. there are a lot of email marketing tools that provide this support where you set something up at the beginning and then have this well-oiled machine automatically generating emails to those that sign up to your opt-in.
